Most Wanted Lanfears
Nicholas Lanfear
I imagine that every genealogist has a ‘most wanted
ancestor’, that elusive forebear without whom further progress
is blocked. In my case it is my great-great-great grandfather
Nicholas Lanfear. His name is spelt variously as Landfere, Landfear,
Landfair, Landfer, Langfur, Langfear. We know the following about
him.
- He was born about 1795 but his place of birth and parents remain a
mystery.
- He was working in Crawley, Hampshire in about 1808 (from a
settlement examination).
- He married Mary Limbrick at Gloucester in 1818.
- He had five children Mary Ann, Edith, Henry, Lousia and Rosina;
the family ended up living in Thornbury, Gloucestershire.
- He was transported to Australia (for stealing a sheep) in 1833 and
received a conditional pardon in 1845.
- A Nicholas Langfield died in Albury, New South Wales on 3rd
March 1859 aged 75.
