National Censuses

Although censuses have been taken in Britain every ten years since 1801, the first national census of interest and use to genealogists is that of 1841. The returns are subject to a hundred year closure rule so the most recent census available to the public is that of 1901. Lanfears that have been found, to date, on these census returns are tabulated here.

Other Censuses

Prior to the national censuses, numerous local censuses were taken. Lanfears have been found in the local censuses for Box, Wiltshire 1801, Lynham, Wiltshire 1697-1702, Eton, Buckinghamshire 1798.

In 1873 the government made a census of Owners of Land in possession of more than 1 acre.
